What Are You Wearing?
Well I don’t wear lipstick, but this topic was brought to my attention this evening. I was visiting my parents and during dinner my mum brought up the topic of lead in lipstick. She had recently read a short article in parade magazine over the weekend and asked me to look in to it. I was quite surprised by what I’ve found in the online articles-such as, that the FDA has no real control over the ingredients in lipstick and cannot require a recall if dangerous materials are found in cosmetics-they can only request a manufacturer to recall the product. Additionally, several well known brand name cosmetics products are listed as having lead as an ingredient in their lipsticks. Any amount of lead is not necessarily a good thing for a person to have on their lips or any other part of their body as it may be absorbed through the skin and can then cause damage to the liver and brain.
Also the articles indicated that if small children are using these lipsticks that they may be more susceptible as their organs are undeveloped and the lead will cause more damage to their livers and possibly to their brains.
I encourage you to read the articles or to do your own research.

MRSA
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA
[pronounced “mer-sa”] has been receiving a
considerable amount of press of late. Many schools
have indicated they had found the bacteria and were
closing for a day or two so that the school could be
cleaned thoroughly. People hear the word and they
allow themselves to get into a frenzy. What many
people are not aware of is that while it can be a
dangerous infection it is also something that many
people have on their bodies. It may be part of the
normal flora of their skin. So long as people wash
their hands thoroughly after they are dirtied or after
they touch someone of something, and they do not touch
their mucous membranes-eyes, mouth, nose-then they
most likely will not get the bacteria into their
bodies and thus will not get sick.
Additionally, there are different forms of MRSA. Some
strains are more virulent and resistant to antibiotics
and others are not as problematic to get rid of if you
were to get sick.
The frenzy that many people may get into when they
hear the word MRSA may lead them to panic. Illness is
like anything else in life-you need to keep a level
head and be calm. Then you can make better choices for
yourself and your loved ones. Lastly-Wash Your Hands!

Fat, Weight, Pounds....
Who's Over-Weight??
America-“We’re not as fat as you think we are!”
Britain's getting obese too! Yes Britain, and the US and Canada...
After listening to the US President Bush’s press conference for 45 minutes I decided to watch some news from across the border. I listened to the CBC noon news from Toronto and was interested to hear that a recent study indicated that Britain is getting fat as well. To be blunt it appears that the entire industrialized world is running the risk of becoming overweight and obese.
Studies indicate that Americans, Brits as well as Canadians all are gaining too much weight from eating too much and exercising too little.
Apparently many of us over estimate how much exercise we get each day and under-estimate how much we eat.
Sounds like we all need to take a nutrition and exercise class! Maybe we need to do it together? We could get a nutrition book on tape while we run, bike, or walk.
Does this study make me look fat?

Who's Ur Doctor..??
Do You Have A UM Doctor?
Living in the south-eastern portion of Michigan you may hear the radio or TV commercial for Beaumont Hospitals that asks, “Do you have a Beaumont doctor?”
I have nothing against Beaumont or any other hospital. I’m not writing this to “dis” Beaumont. But there is a joke at the hospital I work at that goes something like-“We train Beaumont Doctors!”
To continue that tangent there is a recent publication that lists many of the University of Michigan Health System physicians as America’s Top Doctors.
So I guess I’ll ask …Do you have a UM doctor?

What's Your Age..??
How old are you?
Many of us are preoccupied with our age, how we look and how old we might live to be. This web site was forwarded to me and I was asked to take the questions on it to determine how old I’d actually be.
It asks a series of general questions about your lifestyle-exercise, health history, medications taken-and then calculates how long you may live-based on??? Well who knows what it’s actually based on, but it’s an interesting and fun few minutes. If you don’t agree with the results then I’d say prove it wrong!
My results turned out to be 6 years younger than my biological age!
Woo Hoo!

War v. Health-Care
War versus health care! I’m not so old that I can recall FDR or LBJ speaking to about how the government is here to help the people that live in this country, but I’ve read enough to recall that the government of the USA should be here to provide the opportunity for life and liberty for each of its citizens. To that end our current President seems to be forgetting that the littlest citizens need to be protected not only from the alleged terrorists that live over-seas but also from the not-so-alleged viruses and bacteria that cause infections and get people sick.
I usually prefer not to get involved in politics-no more than saying to anyone that you should be informed and be involved in the decisions of our country as much as you are able-but the most recent bill that our President has vetoed makes me realize that I too have a voice and need to stand up and say this is wrong. The President’s veto makes a mockery of his education doctrine of “No Child Left Behind”. While you may find it odd for me to make reference to this I think it’s very appropriate to invoke the President’s own words-and make him eat them in this blog. President Bush does not want to leave any child behind when it comes to education-so that our newest generation will be able to compete intellectually and educationally on the global market, but when it comes to caring for the youngest members of this country when they get sick? Well they’re on their own!
Last week the President vetoed a bill that would have provided monies for the poorest and some not so poor families to have health care. Instead of spending some 35 Billion dollars on this bill, he did spend nearly One-Trillion dollars on the next years Iraq occupation budget.
One trillion for Iraq and nothing for children’s health-care.
That seems fair doesn’t it?
After all I’m sure the rest of the world won’t think anything of our being a spend thrift country ready to go to war and support that over-seas effort for years while seeming to ignore the needs of children who cannot provide for themselves.
The President blames congress for this mess. He’s saying that they were not willing to compromise and that they sent the bill to him too late. Congress is trying to mount an over ride of the veto and is working to get the necessary votes.
Why not simply eliminate the necessity of choosing between the war effort and everything else that the country appears to need-education, health care, homes, jobs-by spending the money for Iraq here in the US.
I do not suggest that we leave the troops high and dry. I do propose that our taxes could be spent in a better way-for our own country and for our own future. Not the future that President Bush apparently sees-where we are sending all the young men and women over to the Middle-East for years to come, but one where they don’t’ have to join the Armed services to receive health care.

Prevent the Flu
Keep yourself healthy and get yourself and your children vaccinated this fall!
It’s now October and as the fall weather becomes more prevalent her in the Upper Midwest states, so too will the cool days and cooler nights. A recent study completed by the CS Mott Children’s Hospital poll on children’s health indicates that 65% of parents plan on having their children [5 years or younger] vaccinated this fall against the flu. The numbers are apparently higher for those parents who are planning on getting the vaccination themselves.
It may be a long and cold winter-with plenty of opportunities for us to interact with sick people! Respiratory issues may play an important role for many of us that work in the health care field, especially if you work in the pulmonary or respiratory specialty. Receiving the flu vaccine is a very prudent and intelligent choice to lessen the chance of becoming sick as well as to prevent those around you from becoming sick-when you may infect them.
Do yourself and all those around you a favor. Get yourself and your family members-no matter how small and young or older-vaccinated for the flu this fall!

Are You Tired Too?
I know that many people come to work, school, or go out with friends and family and consistently say that they are “tired”. I’ve been tired for what seems like weeks at this point. I have been thinking it’s because I work an odd shift-midnights-and have to sleep during the day. Even on my days off I tend to be up most of the night and sleep through part of the day. I’ve talked with co-workers in t he past and asked them how do they deal with sleeping during the day? Some have their ways of getting around the sunshine and day time. One of my friends has to have it completely dark, so that not a bit of sunlight gets in to her room. Another told me that he drinks a glass of wine to relax himself before going to bed in the AM.
Even if you’re NOT a midnight worker, many Americans today simply do not get enough sleep. Between single parents working and running their kids around between school, day-care, sitters and soccer practice. Or single people who work two jobs to pay their bills and try and have a social life. To young people and old alike who simply cannot get to sleep at night, wake up during the night or can’t get back to sleep.
Now this is NOT an online add for some OTC or prescription medication to help you fall asleep. I recently read an online press article from the UMHS-University of Michigan Hospital System’s Web Site about how up to 40% of Americans do not get enough sleep and are fatigued, not simply tired but fatigued and have difficulty in completing their daily activities at home and work. It can be so bad that some cannot function or even do not act like they normally would because they are so tired. In a previous position I held we termed this behavior “ICU-Psychosis”. It’s not an easy thing to necessarily diagnose and not an easy thing to over come. It sounds easy to over come-just get MORE sleep. Doing that is not always easy though.
And to close-I wish each of you a good night’s rest!
