2007 MLB World Series

World Series-Boston Sweeps the Rockies!

Well I’m not a Red Sox fan but I do congratulate them
on winning the series this year as well as for the
second time in four years. Nice job to all the players
and fans in Boston and throughout the country.
They had very good pitching and hitting and kept up
the pressure on the Rockies through the series. I was
hoping that the Rockies would win last night so that
the series would go longer, but it was obvious that
Boston simply had things going in their favor. After
the pinch hit home-run in the top of the 8th it looked
like they’d be celebrating soon. But the rally the
Rockies had in the bottom of the 8th made that
home-run much more important and meaningful by Kielty
in the top of the 8th.
There were certainly things that happened during this
series that took away from my enjoyment, and I imagine
other’s enjoyment of the playoffs. Like Joe Bucks less
than subtle statements favoring Boston and putting
down the Rockies, or the Indians. I stopped counting
the number of times that Buck would comment about “how
lucky” the Indians were over a call, or that a called
strike for a Rockies pitcher was “obviously a ball
well outside the stroke zone.” I enjoy watching and
listening to baseball-especially the playoffs-even if
it’s not a team I’m rooting for, but having color
announcers make statements that favor one team over
the other is not acceptable. I did enjoy listening to
the play-by-play on ESPN radio with Jon Miller and Joe
Morgan. The two of them seemed to have a good repore
and had positive things to say about both teams. In
the future I may simply turn off the sound on my TV
and have the radio on so I can listen with less
favoritism which will allow me to make up my own mind
about how the game is going and whether calls are fair
or not!

Yankees/Phillies in 2009 Series

World Series Tied One Game Each!
The Phillies started off strong and dominant in game one with Cliff Lee pitching the game of his life. Shutting down the Yankees with no earned runs and walking off the field and out of Yankee Stadium with a 6 to 1 win and taking game one as if it were candy from a baby! Lee’s performance was outstanding and even Tim McCarver seemed surprised at not only how well Lee pitched but how relaxed he was on the field. Lee made plays you’d expect in the World Series! Like a nonchalant catch of a pop up to the mound and then a behind the back group of a hot grounder back through the box. If the Phillies end up winning the series it will be because Lee pitched so well in game one it gave the Phillies confidence going in to game two, and guaranteed them at least a split when they come home this weekend.

Game two with AJ Burnett and the ever talkative Pedro Martinez looked to be a repeat of game one through much of the early innings. Pedro was quite dominant and he held a one run lead going into the bottom of the 4th inning until mark Teixeira homered off a change up on the outside of the plate! And it remained tied until Hideko Matsui homered in the bottom of the 6th of Pedro and that was all that Burnett needed. The Yankees took a two run lead going into the 8th and 9th innings with Mariano Rivera pitching a two inning save. His 8th inning appeared less strong when he allowed two runners to reach with only one out, but a strong throw by Jeter got the double-play and got the Yankees out of the 8th inning!

I think it was more of a relief than joy for me when they won last night and even the series at one win apiece! Going back to Philadelphia is not the hard part in my mind for the Yankees, I think keeping the Phillies offense out of the game-as they were by Burnett in game#2-will be the difficult part for their starters and the bull-pen. I expect to see the Yankees come back to the Bronx Wednesday for game #6 and hopefully win the series at home!

2009 World Series Game #1

Yankees/Phillies-World Series Game#1!

Well it’s been six long years for Yankees fans to see their beloved Bronx-Bombers back in the Fall Classic! And it’s been all of a year for the Philadelphia crowd to enjoy the same. It’s going to be a train/I-95 series over the next week and I can imagine that there will be plenty of New Yorkers in Philly over the weekend when the Yankees play there on Saturday and Sunday, and perhaps Monday night too!

Tonight at around 8pm I’ll be at home watching game #1 in this series and waiting to see who has more offense and who has better pitching. I think most of us who have followed the American League and seen the playoffs this fall will expect C.C Sabathia to pitch well and to leave it all on the field. Hopefully we’ll have a great series and see why both these teams belong in the fall classic!

Yankees/Angels Working for Series Bid

Yankees-Angels in the 2009 ALCS!

October 2009 has had some interesting baseball for us to watch and listen too. I saw the Detroit Tigers blow a 7 game lead with a week to go and then loose the division to the Twins in a one game playoff. The Twins then lost the division series to the Yankees in straight games-no real surprise there. Now the Yankees are playing some very good baseball against the Angels and hoping to return to the World Series for the first time in six years.

The last time the Yankees were in the series Joe Torre was their manager. I was sick on dialysis and lived in a basement apartment in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I also watched the Yankees loose in 6 games to the Florida Marlins as Jorge Posada bounced out to 2nd and ended the game. It was a surprise though it shouldn’t have been one for me. I saw them loose in 7 games to Arizona in 2001 and couldn’t believe that Mariano Rivera was capable of losing a game.

Now we have game five to be played tomorrow night in Anaheim, California at 8pm [EST] and there will be millions watching and waiting to see if the Yankees can pull off one more game and go back to the fall classic.

However, I don’t think I’d be living up to my standards if I left this entry without mentioning the very terrible officiating/umping we have seen during these playoffs. Last night’s fiasco was the worst and is being compared to the poor umpping by Leslie Nielsen in the movie Naked Gun! How can someone miss so many obvious calls in such a short amount of time? I realize these guys are human and will make mistakes, but these were obvious ones-not close calls that you needed a digital computer to move frame by frame to view and determine if the call was right. It was so wrong people in the stands could see it!

I hope that the umping gets better and that the Yankees win Thursday night. I’d rather have the Yankees in the series because they earned their way there and won the game than because the umps made a huge mistake and gave the game away.

Mark “The Bird” Fidrych Dies

The Summer of 1976 will not be forgotten by any Detroit Tiger fans, nor any baseball fans that watched Monday night baseball at any point that season. Mark Fidrych was an absolute dynamo on the mound and he electrified the city of Detroit as well as baseball parks across the country when he pitched. The Summer of 76 is being remembered by fans across Detroit and across the country right now in fondness and with some regret as the man who was “The Bird” passed away in an accident at his home on Monday-13th April, 2009.

He will be remembered as the man who smoothed out the mound before each inning he pitched, as the man who talked to the ball, and as an energetic and wild guy on the field with the crazy hair from the 70’s. Mark Fidrych brought a lot of fun and excitement back to Detroit and back to baseball in 1976. When people were not going to the ball park because games seemed boring, and the American Leauge was beginning the designated hitter rule to make the games higher scoring Mark Fidrych made the game interesting not simply because of his quirks on the mound, but because of his energy and his talent. His rookie season he went 19-9 and pitched 24 complete games. I dare you to name the last time any pitcher did that in a season let alone find one who’s had 24 complete games in his career. He pitched like there was no tomorrow and in some ways that is exactly what he had. In 1976 he was the starter for the AL in the All Star game and was rookie of the year. He had the lowest ERA of any starter that year.

He brought a lot of excitement to the game and the city. I recall the year after there was even a song that circulated on the radio about “The Bird” that I have at home. It’s a small “45” style disc that my aunt and uncle got for me from a local radio station. I can remember the last game he started as well in 1980. I listened to it one fall evening as I threw my own ball against the steps of our house and wondered if this would be the start of his comeback. I didn’t know it then but I was listening to his last game, and he didn’t pitch well either-giving up 5 runs in less than an inning. It was a dissapointing outting and more so it was dissapointing that he was never able to regain the effectiveness and strength that he had in 1976.
Mark “The Bird” Fidrych will be missed, but more so he will be remembered by all of us here in the southeastern Michigan area for what he did for baseball and what he gave us in the season of 1976.

World Series Game #5 Suspended!

For the first time in baseball history a World Series game has been suspended. With the rain falling like sheets of icy water, the wind blowing and the temp dropping MLB decided to suspend the game in the middle of the 6th inning.

Tampa had just tied the game 2-2 in the top of the inning with a base hit by Carlos Peña giving B.J. Hunt the chance to score from 2nd base and tying the game.

Fox sports announced the game would be restarted Tuesday evening at 8pm if the weather cooperates. And recently-just within the last hour I heard on the national news broadcast that with the weather being so bad in Philadelphia that game #5 would be suspended still and will possibly be re-started tomorrow night at 830pm. So for all you fans waiting to watch the end of game #5 we’ll have to wait until Wednesday night now.

Maybe that’s for the best! After all I saw on the weather channel that it’s snowing in Phillie right now!

World Series Game #4

Game #4 of the World Series is over and the Philadelphia Phillies came alive and took a large lead in the game and the series. The Phillies won 10-2 and now have a 3 games to 1 lead in the series.

It started slow and there were several Phillies who had loud bats last night. Ryan Howard had two homers and five RBI's and came out of his hitting slump in the past two games. Jason Werth homered and the Phillies starting pitcher-Blanton- not only had 7 strong innings giving up only 2 earned runs-on solo homers-but also hit the first home run of his career and the first homer by a pitcher in the world series since 1974.

The Phillies now have a chance Monday night to win the series at home.

World Series game #2

Game #2 of the 2008 world series brought us a great game- pitching, defensive plays and good hitting on both sides. Like game #1 there was some questioning-mostly by the announcers though-on a couple of plays.

The Rays did put together a better game last night than in game #1 and started off quickly by putting runs up early in the game. Taking the lead early, and in the 2nd inning there was controversy as to whether Bardeli swung at a pitch or not. Joe Buck and Tim MCarver both were adamant that he swung. Yet on replies it was clear the ump had called the pitch a ball, and that the batter had held his swing. Yet both announcers were obviously upset that the ump had made the wrong call-despite the possibility that the fans watching could make up their own minds based on what was shown. I find it interesting that I can come up with such a different answer from the event after seeing the same video/audio reply as Buck and Mc Carver.

The other incident is one in which the ump must not have seen the phillie batter-Rollins-have his uniform brushed by the pitch in the 9th inning. Either that or he didn't get hit.I waited for Buck to start complaining about how the Phillie's lost because the game had been stolen from them. But thankfully I just heard Buck complain about how the Phillie's should have had two one with the tying run at the plate and one out instead of one on and two out.

Game #2 was fun to watch and was a great experience. It reminded me of past Octobers and past series with great plays and games going back and forth. Tampa won game #2 (4-2) and has tied the series at one game apiece. Game #3 is Saturday night in Philadelphia. I Can't wait!

Tampa Bay in First World Series!

October 22nd, 2008 the Tampa Bay Rays hosted their very first World Series home game at the dome in St.Petersberg! You could see the excitement of the fans in the dome and it must have been incredibly loud in there during the pre-game as well as throughout the game.

What wasn’t seen was any real nervousness or misplay by the Rays despite this being their first series appearance. They played well-like old pros really-and it was a close game that showed pitching and defense to be the key factors that won game one.

I found it hard at first to root or care who was leading through the initial part of the game, but then listening to the announcers make it sound as if the Rays should somehow be playing worse than they were-as if everyone would be nervous playing in the series? And the players on both sides played well, and made mistakes at times. Ryan Howard playing 1st for Philadelphia left much to be desired for his work in the field as well as his lack of batting tonight. He was 0-4 with 3 strike-outs and an error.

Tampa had scoring opportunities in both the 4th and 5th innings and could not produce the needed hits to bring the runners across. As to whether you see this as a lack of run production by the Rays or a superb bit of pitching by the Phillies would be more dependent on who you’re rooting for I think!

Overall it was a very good game and a close game. I look forward to game #2 later tonight!

Now if we could just get rid of joe buck doing the announcing I’d be happy!

Dodgers Win a Playoff Series!

Not since 1988 had the LA Dodgers won a post-season series. Now it was rather big news back in 1988 when they did win, since that was the World Series they won and had beaten Oakland-and no one thought they would that post-season. But the Dodgers behind Orel Hershiser and the former Detroit Tiger Kirk Gibson came from behind and beat Oakland in 5 games.
That was a phenomenal season for the Dodgers, and I’ll be honest I wasn’t’ a huge fan of the dodgers then-nor am I now-but they did have Kirk Gibson and Hershiser to watch and be amazed by that season.

Twenty years later the Dodgers made their first appearance in post season and won their first post-season series since that 1988 World Series. What makes this all unique-at least to me-and worthwhile to mention is that the catalyst for this past season’s post-season play was their new manager-Joe Torre. The Boy from Brooklyn, who wasn’t good enough to lead the Yankees one more season, took the dodgers to the NLCS in his first season as manager.

Way to go Joe! And hopefully he’ll take them back again and again-just as he did with the Yankees for 11 straight seasons!
