Lions Loose Again…
I’m really getting tired of writing that subject line! It’s been two seasons since we’ve had anything to cheer over, be excited about and have any hope that the future might be brighter than what the past has been. After yesterdays 17 to 10 loss to the St.Louis Rams I’m starting to wonder what we have left to look forward to this season. I’d like to think that the Lions played well at least in this losing effort, but that would be a lie. The Lions played one of the worst teams in the NFL and should have been able to beat them handily if the Lions were a team that had it together. The Lions were losing by a field goal at the end of the 1st quarter. Why they couldn’t have scored themselves against a team that has had nearly as many looses as the Lions had in the past two years I couldn’t tell you. Then Stafford was intercepted in the 2nd quarter in t he end-zone. The only reason we got on the scoreboard was that the Rams defense made the mistake of coming out of the end-zone and then being tackled back in the end-zone. A safety! Wow a 10-2 game at half-time.
The Lions did show some life in the 2nd half by tying the game 10-10 by making the two point conversion in the beginning of the 4th quarter, but with less than two minutes left the Lions allowed the Rams Steven Jackson to run 25 yards into the end-zone. He couldn’t be stopped and the Lions had nearly half their defense on him and with this the Lions found a way to lose again this week.
The Lions need to do something to make tackles, to move the ball, run the ball and score!

Detroit Lions Keep Loosing
Lions Loose Last Three Sundays
The Detroit Lions have lost in their last three games. To most of us who follow the Lions and watch them each week this is not really a shock to our system. To the rest of the country who follows football-and even to Michigan residents-this is what was to be expected. But in the last three weeks they have lost two close games that could have gone in our favor. The games against the Bears in Chicago and against the Steelers at Ford Field could have gone in our favor as the Lions showed offense as well as defense throughout the game. The Lions couldn’t put it all together though and as many of us were trying to keep our life in the land of denial going-at least I was-last week we watched the Lions loose to the Packers at Lambeau by a score of 26-0.
A shut out! We played horridly, and I watched in amazement while the young rookie who hurt his knee just over two weeks ago stood on the sideline laughing and talking with his teammates, while Dante Culpepper pulled a muscle and had to come out of the game. It’s the same story as last year. We have a quarterback we think will start to lead and give us some offense. He gets hurt and then another quarterback gets hurt. We are back to having Drew Stanton come in and finish the game. Hopefully he’ll actually get some time to practice this week and be better prepared to go on the field in 10 days when the Lions play the Rams at home at Ford Field on Sunday November 1st. The Rams are currently winless so perhaps the Lions can beat up on them and squeeze another victory out of this season. They will; be playing games against teams that are under .500 in the next several weeks which could prove to help the Lions record. I hope that it helps us put a few more wins in the column and doesn’t have us sitting here wondering how much longer we have to wait to become a better football team.

Brady Has A Career Game!
Patriots Run Over the Titans on Sunday!
I’m not a fan of the NE Patriots as I’m sure many aren’t. Tom Brady is a former UM star and in the past I’ve supported NE to show my loyalty to a UM alumni. This past weekend Brady did something I’ve never seen, and may not be seen again for many years. He threw for six touchdowns in a game and five in a quarter. Amidst the snow, wind and cold of New England he made the Titans look like pee-wee football players and took his team down the field so many times I stopped counting!
A 59 to 0 score at the end of the game should be enough to convey how poorly the Titans played, or how well the Patriots did-but in this case it was both. The Titans who were 13-3 last year are 0-6 [worse than the Detroit Lions if you can believe it] and the Patriots are 4-2 and are in 1st place in the AFC East division.
This game may have silenced many of Brady’s critics, but all we can do is wait and see if he turns out to be the Brady of old and watch and wait for some more exciting football to come.

Lions Beat Washington!
Finally!
The Detroit Lions after a very long time-yes since December 2007-have won a regular season game. Their 19 game losing streak is at an end and as the owner of the Lions put it so well yesterday in a post game interview with Fox 2-Detroit, “the monkey is off our backs, King Kong is off our backs and now we can start winning.”
The Lions have had a huge turn-over in staff, both coaching and players, that this team is an entirely different one from the past several years. Despite that this team still was caring the weight of last years horrible 0-16 record and with two losses to start this season it wasn’t making winning any easier.
Yet the Lions finally put together a strong performance that lasted the entire game. They had good defense that stopped Washington’s running game at the goal line when they needed. They were able to come up with an interception to stop a drive in the 4th quarter and despite giving Washington a last chance at the end they stopped them short of scoring and short of breaking our hearts again.
The Lions win came in front of what must have been one of the smallest crowds at Ford Field since the stadium opened. Just 40k+ came to see them play yesterday and who can blame us for not going? I sat at home and listened to the game and wondered and waiting and hoped that they’d finally win.
Perhaps now that the Lions have won one game this season it will be, as the Owner William Clay Ford predicts, easier to win. Hopefully this team can put behind that losing streak and move on with confidence to play the Bears next weekend in Chicago. A cold and unwelcoming place soldier Field will be to the Detroit Lions. May the win we just had this weekend keep them warm and may the memory of winning keep them confident enough to win again!

Favre’s A Wuss
My subject line will undoubtedly upset and even anger some Packer, Jet and Viking fans, but having experienced the cheese-head revolution when I lived in the green Bay area for two years I can honestly say that Green Bay Packer fans truly deserved better than they have received from the once great and now twice retired Brett Favre.
Favre announced last night-august 18th-that he was returning to the NFL and would be playing the 2009 season with the Minnesota Vikings. I’m sure this will not bring great joy to the rival Green bay fans. Favre holds nearly ever major NFL throwing record and his career was a storied one for Green Bay. He decided to retire in 2008 and since then has retired twice and reneged on that statement twice.
I have no dislike of Favre as a person, but if he wants to play football, then he ought to be honest with the fans as say, “yes my desire and goal is to play football this season” even if he didn’t know where that might be. Unfortunately he has made too many statements saying he had made a final decision and would stay retired and then changed his mind and come back to whatever team would take him. My hope is not that he will play poorly this season, but that he will remain committed to one team until he finally does retire.

Lions Lost on Thanksgiving!
Well I think I’ve found a new way to say that the Detroit Lions lost this past week.
They suck!
There was a lot of talk from the Lions head coach Rod Marinelli about how the Lions needed the game last week to get them psyched up and to play well. They needed a nationally televised game and to play a good team so that they would play better. They needed to pressure to perform better. Well the nationally televised game simply showed the rest of the country that they were right all along-that the Lions play poorly and don’t step up in the big games and don’t know how to win. The 47 to 10 loss showed everyone-including die hard Lions fans-that the Lions have nothing left to play for this season. They are 0-12 and are looking more and more like they will indeed be the first team to ever finish 0-16. They may be the next perfect team-but not in the way any of us want to be remembered.
From the second play of the game the Lions showed how not to play-they fumbled on a running play and it lead to a Titans touchdown less than one minute later. The only Lions highlights for the game was Jason Hanson’s 53 yard field goal in the first half and a fumble recovery by the defense who nearly ran it in for a touchdown. If not for these there would have been NO Lions highlights! Truthfully-the local sportscasters were calling the highlights, “lowlights” on the late news. The Lions seem to have very little to play for anymore-except maybe pride. Pride for themselves and for their fans.
I hope they win at least one of their final 4 games. Yet with them playing Minnesota, Indianapolis, New Orleans and Green Bay at Lambeau I don’t expect any miracles to happen, or many smiles to occur.

Lions remain Winless [November 2008]
I don’t consider myself an overly superstitious person-at work I am but I have experienced the wrath of the Hospital spirit gods run amok when you tempt them by saying the wrong word!
Yesterday The Detroit Lions played yet another home game-another home game which was blacked out because it again wasn’t sold out! I got to listen to most of the first quarter and part of the 3rd quarter as I was driving to and from a family event. I only got to hear perhaps 30 minutes of playing time-which is half the game-and in that time I heard each of the Lions scores. I heard Dante Culpeper throw to Calvin Johnson in the end zone for the first touchdown. I heard the defense pick up a fumble on the next series of plays by Tampa and they ran the ball back for a TD. I heard Jason Hanson hit a 40 yard field goal putting the Lions up by 17 points in the first quarter alone!
I entered the church to go to my cousin’s baptism and when I came out 2 hours later the Lions had given up the ball, the lead and the game! They were down 35 to 17 and I then heard them get another field goal to come within two scores at 35 to 20. What happened with this team over two quarters while I was in church? Did they put a different team on the field? Did they run out of energy and just gave up?
This team is now 0-11 and it appears they have a real chance at making history, and again it’s not the history that any of us want for the Lions. I do not want to be ashamed of having a lion’s shirt on-well I do get looks already though-and if they go 0-16 they will be the first team to do so and who knows how long it’ll be until they can earn any respect from anyone-other teams or their fans.
It seems like years ago-and it was only a year-when they were 6-2 and had high hopes of making the playoffs and giving their fans some hope.
Hope is gone. It left the building. Dignity went with him. Shame is arriving on a bus and it’ll arrive Thursday afternoon when the Lions get their manes handed to them by the Titans.

Lions Loose to Jaguars-November 2008
The Lions played the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday and they lost yet again. I've been trying to think of a new way to spin the loss both in my mind and here in my blog. But the simple answer is that the Detroit Lions don't play well enough to win. They've played well in many of their games but not well enough throughout the entire game. Winning teams find a way to win-look at the NY Giants Super bowl win over the undefeated NE Patriots.
The Lions have done complete opposite they've found a way to consistently loose even when they have taken an early lead or come back from a deficit. This last weekend is a prime example. The end result was a loss 38 to 14 to the Jaguars at Ford Field. But looking at the details the Lions made moves so that they can lose for the rest of the season!
The Lions signed former superstar quarterback Dante Culpepper to be the new starter since Kitna has been out for the past month. In my opinion Dan Orlovsky has played well and progressed and it showed with the Lions scoring well and staying closer until the end of the game.
Culpepper started and not only didn't play well he was pulled from the game. This future hall of famer who may be wearing a Lions jersey now, but certainly won't be when he stands at the podium making his speech at Akron.
The Lions have consistently taken young, good talent at quarterback and burned them out-Rodney Peete, Charlie Batch to mention a few-but now the Lions are avoiding taking good talent and turning them bad, but are simply taking an old, over used quarterback who's already broken in and broken. I hope I'm wrong, but the Lions have proven me wrong when I've been optimistic about their chances in the past. So I'll wait to see if they prove to be the old Lions or have a new found spirit with their new found quarterback.

Lions Lost to the Bears in Chicago
Well for all of us who saw any or part of the game, or for those who just saw the highlights, or maybe even for those who didn’t see any of the game, missed the highlights and just saw the box score online…..
It’s probably not a huge surprise that the Lions lost. They went into Chicago, without much hope emanating from their fans and played a very good 2nd quarter. They even played a decent first half over-all. But the fact that the bears defense shut the Lions out in the 2nd half and allowed the Bears to come back to win the game made the Lions look bad on tv, on the sports shows, to football fans everywhere and to Lions fans-where ever we might choose to hide at this point.
We play the Jacksonville Jaguars next week at home at Ford field. I’ve been considering going to the game-yes you didn’t read it incorrectly and it’s not a typo! I’ve been thinking of going to one of the home games this year as I think that my lack of being there doesn’t’ make them play any better, so by being there they can’t play any worse!

Detroit Lions Loose-yet again!
This time on the road in Houston and they didn’t look any better loosing this week than they have in previous weeks. It was after all 21-0 in the 2nd quarter before the Lions even scored. I’m nearly given up hope for this team this year-and yes this is much early than last year or in years past, but it feels like there is nothing that this team does that makes a difference. They recently traded wide receiver Roy Williams to Dallas for draft picks. He was one of their better players, and while he had been here for several years what surprised me the most was the reaction and statement of coach Marinelli when asked by the press about the trade. He made reference to how the trade helps the Lions prepare for the future and helps to build a solid future with new young players. I’ve been a Lions for most if not all of my life and all I’ve ever heard from the coaches and GM’s is that they are rebuilding.
What I’ve come to learn is that EVERY year is a rebuilding year for the Loins. They don’t seem to know how to play for today and win this season. It’s always about how they are looking for the future.
I’m starting to think Lions fans should make their own preparation for the future-and look for a new team to root for-but that is simply frustration coming out on my part-30 years of frustration!

What I’ve come to learn is that EVERY year is a rebuilding year for the Loins. They don’t seem to know how to play for today and win this season. It’s always about how they are looking for the future.

Lions Play Well, But Loose Again
It’s not hard to believe that our Detroit Lions lost another game this season. It’s not hard to believe that they are now 0-5 with few games in the near future that could be potential winners! But what is hard to believe is that the Lions played very well-especially in comparison to their miserable performances over the past 5 weeks, and yet they still lost.
The defense was like a Hoover vacuum that sucked up all the loose manure in the Humphrey dome-hey Minnesota is a rather rural state! I know a couple of people from grad school whose families were dairy farmers!
But whether the Lions played well lor not, and despite the defense’s good performance in stopping Minnesota so many times. They lost. The blocked a field goal attempt in the second half and actually gave us some hope that they could win. They were ahead at half-time 3-2 and made me think of tonight’s NLCS game with the score!
They even had Orlovsky playing well despite not being the “regular” starter and in spite of being tackled and sacked on several occasions-including a few hard ones-he played well and kept going.
It’s a disappointing loss. I’m sure nearly every other fan in the league is saying tonight, “the Lions Lost? Dude what else is new?” But I was hoping in the back of my mind and deep down that we’d have a win going in to Houston next weekend.
Now we’ll face the Texans-who are 1-4 and had an awesome come from behind win, which by the way 4 teams came back in the last minute and won from the 1pm start games today! It was like it was scripted! I saw the Vikings kick a field goal. The Texans run in for a TD, Atlanta come back and beat Chicago after Chicago had JUST taken the lead with under a minute left, and the Rams beat Washington with a late field goal. It felt like I was watching a Hollywood scripted football afternoon!
Can’t wait to see if Detroit gets written into the winning end for next week!
